Of Popcorn and Jump Scares

After Noah had left the pack, there had been very few pack members he’d had any desire to keep in contact with. Helen was one of them. After spending most of their childhood together, it was hard to let go of their easy, banter-filled friendship. Lately they hadn’t talked much, so when she’d texted him out of the blue, he eagerly jumped at the opportunity to catch up - even if it was over no doubt cheesy, over the top gory horror movies.

As he awaited for her to arrive at his house, he pulled out the junk food he’d stocked up on during his last visit to the store and put some popcorn in the microwave. He glanced at his phone. It was the time they’d agreed on meeting; she would be there at any minute. The microwave dinged behind him, and he emptied the bag into two plastic bowls. Just as he was moving towards the living room did he hear a knock at the door, and he smiled to himself. There she is, he thought. He placed the bowls down on the coffee table and hurried to open the door. “Hey there, Blondie.” He grinned, opening his arms for a friendly hug. “How’ve you been?”
